Raleigh, NC: Lancaster County and Indian Land resident volleyball coach, Jim Seidel has taken his team (Gaston Day Spartans), for a second year in a row to the North Carolina NCISAA State Championship title match. They faced Davidson Day, a team the Spartans had already defeated once in the regular season. In a highly competitive and tough match, the Spartans ultimately fell short to the Patriots in three sets 26-24, 25-19 and 25-17. Seidel added after the game, “coaching in a state championship has always been a dream of mine, I have been fortunate to have coached in two of them back to back”. ” We have four seniors, but a very young team with one 7th grader, four 8th graders, two freshman, two sophomores and the remainder five players are upperclassmen”, added coach Seidel. “As coach Jim Valvano always said, “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up”. “These are words our team lived up to everyday, and it showed on the court”, stated coach Seidel. Gaston Day went 35-5 this season, winning the Metrolina Area Conference regular season title and the MAC Tournament. They had six players earn all conference awards, and four players earned all state awards. Graduating seniors Sidney Bing ended her high school career as setter with 3,500 assists and 1,000 digs, while LauraLee Hurst achieved over 2,000 kills and 1,000 career digs in her high school career. Both Bing and Hurst were recruited to play volleyball in college next year. Gaston Day went into the championship match ranked 12 overall in the state of North Carolina for all high school varsity volleyball teams. Seidel’s win/loss stats for the 2019-2020 season for combined JV and Varsity was an outstanding 47-6 for the year and repeated as the NCISAA Runners-Up for 2019-2020.
Jim Seidel is the owner of the award-winning, Carolina Meat & Fish Co in Charlotte, NC. Seidel has been playing competitive beach volleyball for 15 years. He has coached indoor and beach volleyball for the past 6 years. Seidel coached for Indian Land Middle School, briefly coached at Indian Land High School, and coached at Charlotte Latin High School. He is coaching his 4th year at Carolina Union Volleyball Club. Seidel has been assigned to coach the 17 Nationals team at the club for the upcoming season. CUVC is listed in the Top 100 Volleyball Clubs in America. Coach Seidel has just completed his 2nd year as coach at Gaston Day, where he was Head Coach of the JV team and won back to back conference championships as Assistant Varsity Coach and Head Scout for the Volleyball Program.
