Gaston Day Takes 2nd on Gold in Byrnes Invitational
(Spartanburg, SC) Dorman won the Byrnes Invitational on Saturday, beating Gaston Day 25-19 and 26-24 at the Upward Stars Volleyball Center. Gaston Day Takes 2nd on Gold . “We came in here having some success in scrimmages, but we didn’t really know how it was going to translate into actual play,” Gaston coach Derek Bing said.
Assistant varsity coach and head scout Jim Seidel said he found out quite a bit about his team in a day that lasted beyond 12 hours.
“That’s a long day, starting at 8 a.m. (the title game didn’t end until 9:45),” Seidel said. “I learned that our girls have a lot of resilience. There were a couple of times today we were down to some extremely good teams and managed to battle our way back.
“I thought it was a great tournament for us,” coach Derek Bing said. “We really worked on a lot of things. We came out of here better today.
“It’s early for us, but we went up against some public schools and did well,” coach Jim Seidel said. Seidel added that Gaston played and defeated: Woodmont, Broome, Eastside, Blythewood, Belton – Honea Path, Mann, then only losing to Dorman High School, a South Carolina 5A volleyball team and currently ranked #4 in the entire state of South Carolina (25-19, 26-24).
“We had some young kids in there, including a 14-year-old, on the right side. This was a good experience for them.” coach Seidel added.
Other bracket winners included Riverside (silver), Wade Hampton (bronze) and Landrum (copper).
