Long time Indian Land resident Jim Seidel has led his 2nd team in three straight years to a North Carolina state volleyball championship. Previously Seidel helped lead the Gaston Day Spartans to two straight NCISAA state championships as their assistant varsity and head scout. This year Seidel took the helm as head coach at Mountain Island Charter School where they just completed an undefeated regular season and won the NCHSAA PAC 7 conference. They went on to win the NCHSAA Western Region finals in the playoffs against top ranked Bishop McGuinness. The Raptors of Mountain Island were the first team ever from their high school to play in a state championship and the first public school in Gaston County, NC to ever make it to a state championship. They ultimately lost in four sets to East Wake Academy. During the season coach Seidel had three volleyball players signed to play in college at East Carolina University, App State and Winston-Salem State.

After the season, Mountain Island had four players earn All Conference, one Honorable Mention All Conference and one Player of the Year for the NCHSAA PAC 7 Conference. Additionally, they also had All State selections by, with a 2nd team All State and an Honorable Mention. Seidel went on to earn the coveted volleyball Coach of Year by the North Carolina Volleyball Coaches Association, or the NCVBCA. Seidel also coached the Raptor JV team and had a combined varsity and JV win/loss record of 30 & 3 for a .909 winning percentage for the 2020-21 volleyball season. “This really was a storybook season”, Seidel said. “I’ve been so fortunate to be surrounded by incredible players and their families this year” “To cap it all of with All State Honors, a third state championship appearance and Coach of the Year has truly been a blessing”, Seidel added.

Coach Seidel also coaches at Carolina Union Volleyball Club for their 17 national team, a top 100 volleyball club in the USA and plays competitive beach volleyball in the area. Seidel will coach nationally this year at the Sunshine Classic in Orlando, the Big South in Atlanta and at the AAU National Championships in Orlando, Florida in June, 2021.
